Rationality and the Reflective Mind 3: The Key Functions of the Reflective Mind and the Algorithmic Mind hat Support Human Rationality

12/08/2013

Rational thinking largely involves the mental simulation of hypothetical scenarios. The algorithmic mind contributes to this by providing the “space” for the mind to create and retain these scenarios, as well as the ability to sustain such an operation. The reflective mind contributes the call to action to begin such a simulation. One could have the mental power to perfectly model many different future possibilities, but if they do not think to apply this skill, they may fail to act rationally.

Intelligence is the ability to inhibit system 1 functions, and rationality is to tendency to utilize that ability, or at least to check to see if it is appropriate to do so.
